How to Make Sure You're Choosing the Right Spa

With the proliferation of spas in the last 10 years, it's hard to know how to judge one against the other - aside from actually making an appointment. Most of us don't get to visit spas frequently, so why take a chance that you'll be disappointed? The following are 5 questions you should ask up front to take the guess work out of choosing a spa.

  1. Is It a High Volume Operation?
    Your first clue is whether the spa services a lot of groups. You may have had the disappointing experience of being "processed" rather than served at a large spa.   2. Are the Spa's Employee's Actually Employees?
    To cut down on overhead such as employee benefits, many spas hire independent contractors. By law, these spas cannot manage, supervise or train these independent spa therapists. Independent contractors are required to carry their own liability insurance, but many spas don't take the steps to ensure that guests are properly protected by coordinating the contractor's coverage with their own. If you've ever visited a spa where no one seems to be on the same page, it probably wasn't staffed by actual employees. A client who is left alone during a treatment by a technician, who leaves to take a cigarette, food or telephone break, can feel forgotten and uneasy. A relaxing experience can quickly turn tense if a therapist who needs to meet a sales quota begins to push additional products and treatments that don't benefit the client.
